Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
Most people know that prayer is a vital part of following Christ, but many people have questions as to what prayer actually looks like or whether it even matters. Some might also say that prayer is complaining to God or asking for favors; but in reality it is so much more.
Prayer is central to our connection with God, and made possible through a personal relationship with Christ. When we share our fears and concerns, God listens as a parent would, His Spirit responding to our heart. Likewise, when we share our hopes and dreams, He listens with the ears of a Father and responds in love. But even more than that, when we pray, it tunes us in to God’s big picture for our life and teaches us to pursue His plan.
Prayer is also an integral part of our relationship with one another. Galatians 6:2 encourages us to “carry each other's burdens.” As a church body praying for each other is central to what it means to belong; and even though we can't always fix things in one another's life, we can always help carry a burden by encouraging and praying for one another.
